We are sad to announce the passing of our friend Julie Brett.
Julie was a kind and generous person and a talented artist who brought joy to
everyone who knew her. Julie loved Cornwall and Devon and was passionate about
painting. She was inspired by the spectacular scenery around her and derived
so much enjoyment from painting the sparkling seas, golden beaches, rugged cliffs
and wild moorland in pictures which lift the heart.
Born in East Anglia, Julie trained at Colchester School of Art. She
moved to Cornwall more than 20 years ago, opening a gallery with her husband, Colin.
Later, they set up their home and Julie’s studio in two granite barns perched high
above the tidal reaches of the River Fowey. A keen admirer of the Newlyn School, Julie
particularly loved the pastel work of Elizabeth Adela Forbes, and this became her
own preferred medium.
In 2005, Julie was diagnosed with cancer. Her love of art gave her
great strength and determination and she continued to paint until very recently.
Julie prepared for each exhibition with characteristic enthusiasm, expressing through
her work her depth of feeling for the places she loved.
Julie celebrated nature in all its glory - the glint of sunlight on wet
sand, the silver linings of clouds, the shimmering highlights on rippling water and the
glowing colours of a magical sunset. Evoking a sense of freedom and joy, Julie’s pictures live on.
