As a teenager, Duncan was advised to train for a “proper job” instead of pursuing his dream of becoming a full-time artist. However, when he was 18 and about to start a course in graphic design he decided, instead, to take a year to prove himself as a painter. It paid off and, within the year, his debut one-man show was a sell-out. Today, Duncan specialises in landscapes, seascapes, harbour and beach scenes. His work embraces both a highly intimate, detailed style in the manner of the Victorian watercolourists and a looser technique, inspired by Turner, the French Impressionists and Edward Seago. Family holidays, particularly in Devon and Cornwall, influenced Duncan’s work. Early memories are of a cottage by the beach, where his love of the coast and ocean began. There were large expanses of wet sand to run across to reach the waves, rock pools to play in and fishing harbours to visit. The “first sight of the sea” is a thrill Duncan enjoys to this day. The beauty of the environment and the quality of light are irresistible attractions and his evocative paintings capture the changing moods of the different seasons and times of the day.
