Maud Earl became famous during the Victorian era for her accurate pictures of dog breeds. She was born in London into a family of artists and, from a young age, was taught to draw and paint by her father. Her work won wide international recognition. She exhibited at The Royal Academy and developed a select clientèle, including Queen Victoria and other members of the Royal Family.
