Julie Brett loved Cornwall and Devon. She was inspired by the great outdoors of the South West and derived so much enjoyment from painting its sparkling seas, golden beaches, rugged cliffs and winding creeks. Julie was born in East Anglia and trained at Colchester School of Art. She moved to the picturesque Cornish fishing village of Polperro, where she and her husband, Colin, ran an art gallery. Later, they set up their home and her artist’s studio in two granite barns perched high above the tidal reaches of the River Fowey. A keen admirer of The Newlyn School, Julie particularly loved the pastel work of Elizabeth Adela Forbes, and this became her own preferred medium. In 2005, Julie was diagnosed with cancer. Her love of art gave her great strength and determination and she continued to paint, expressing through her work her depth of feeling for the places she loved.
