Clearing the Hedge
Lionel Dalhousie Robertson Edwards, RI RCamA (1878 – 1966)
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated ’05.
13½” x 9½” (34.3 cm x 24.2 cm)
Painted on linen canvas and in fine original condition, this is an excellent example of the early work of one of the most important and popular equestrian artists of the 20th Century. Edwards was himself an accomplished horseman, and his pictures reveal a superb understanding of the animal and its anatomy. He worked as an illustrator for “The Graphic” and “Punch” and illustrated many equestrian books. During World War I he served in the Army Remount Service, and recorded the role played by horses during the conflict.
