Rowland Fisher was born at Gorleston in Norfolk, the son of a master mariner. His lifelong love of ships is reflected in his painting and this exhilarating example captures the thrill of racing yachts in a lively breeze. Fisher was a founder member of The Society of Marine Artists in 1939 and, although he lived at Gorleston throughout his life, he was a frequent visitor to Cornwall and became a member of The St. Ives Society of Artists. He was also an expert ship modeller and a painter of landscapes in both oil and watercolour. Fisher exhibited his work at The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and The Royal Society of British Artists and was also elected to The Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
