Walter Henry Sweet was born and educated in Exeter and attended Exeter School of Art when the painter John Shapland was headmaster. Sweet was an accomplished etcher, but worked predominantly in watercolours, painting landscapes, coastal and village scenes in Cornwall and Devon. He was a regular participant in the Devon and Exeter Exhibitions at Elands Art Gallery in the early 1900s. At the outbreak of the First World War, Sweet joined the Devonshire Regiment and was in active service abroad. From 1932, he worked for the internationally renowned postcard company, Valentine and Sons, producing landscapes, floral and architectural designs.
