Uren, who was born in Truro, was primarily a painter of Cornish coastal scenes and seascapes. Until the late 1890s he lived at Penzance and he was painting in Newlyn and Lamorna before the internationally renowned art colonies became established there. His early exhibited works included a view of Penzance at The Royal Society of British Artists in 1876 and, in 1895, he displayed watercolours of Cornish coastal scenes in the inaugural exhibition of Passmore Edwards Art Gallery, Newlyn. Uren and his wife were the parents of ten children, five girls and five boys, all but one of whom were born in Penzance. The couple’s youngest child was born in 1899 in Plymouth, where the family was then living. They later returned to Cornwall and Uren died in Penzance on March 14, 1932, at the age of 86.
