John Shapland was born in Dawlish and lived for most of his life in Topsham Road, Exeter. He studied at Exeter School of Art, where he later became a teacher and, in 1898, headmaster. He travelled extensively, especially in Europe, and painted scenes of the Italian Lakes, Venice and the South of France. However, the coasts of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset provided him with his favourite subjects. He was a well-respected figure in the South West and a family man, who had six sons and six daughters. John Shapland exhibited five pictures at The Royal Academy and also displayed work at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, The Fine Art Society and The New Gallery.
