The Guildhall, Exeter
Alfred Leyman (1856 – 1933)
Watercolour. Signed.
20” x 15” (50.8 cm x 38.1 cm)
This Exeter-born artist specialised in watercolour paintings of towns, villages, landscapes and landmarks around the South West. His work is a valuable record of the history and architecture of these places and provides a fascinating glimpse of life in the region a century ago. He moved to Honiton in 1888 and, in 1893, became the art master at Allhallows School, a post he held for 40 years. Leyman continued to paint throughout his life and was a regular participant in the biannual Devon and Exeter Exhibitions at Elands Art Gallery in the early part of the 20th Century.
